Health Care & Tort Reform
As a former health care and human services executive, Bob Vander Plaats knows Iowa’s healthcare system is influenced by many entities, including doctors, dentists, chiropractors, patients, and insurance groups. As governor, he will bring together those diverse interests with consumers to seek reasonable, attainable solutions to our state’s health care challenges.
Bob Vander Plaats is:
• FOR a comprehensive vision for Iowa’s healthcare system.
• FOR a performance-based, results-oriented Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement system versus being penalized under the current system for high quality outputs.
• FOR unfettered competition in the state of Iowa for insurance providers that want to offer services within our borders.
• FOR promoting and incentivizing health savings accounts, medical savings accounts and personal responsibility for one’s health.
• FOR preventive health care versus reactionary measures for health care.
• FOR creating the best environment to recruit the best doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to our state.
• AGAINST transferring Medicaid or Medicare dollars into the general fund to balance the state budget or using these dollars for any purpose other than their intended use.
• FOR holding accountable any individual or entity that misuses Medicaid or Medicare dollars.
• FOR providing a hand-up or a bridge to allow people to achieve maximum independence, potential and dignity within Iowa’s services system.
• AGAINST government programs that stereotype individuals and create dependency on public support.
• FOR tort reform; instituting a cap of $250,000 on non-economic damages.
• FOR disincentives for frivolous lawsuits; applying a loser-pay system.
• FOR the petitioning of higher Medicare reimbursement rates.
• FOR a proper jury of ones peers.
• AGAINST using Medicaid funds for general expenditures.
• AGAINST embryonic stem cell research.
• AGAINST human cloning.
• AGAINST abortion.
• FOR making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime.
